
I see the visual contradictions inherent in painting and drawing—image vs. mark, form vs. shape, space vs. surface—as metaphors for the varied and often contradictory elements that compose our daily existence. Resolving a work—achieving a gestalt which transcends the sum of each painting’s parts—enables it to serve as a catharsis for both artist and viewer.
David Kohan (b.1959, Johnstown, PA) received his BFA in painting from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and his MFA, also in painting, from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he subsequently taught for ten years.
Mr. Kohan has taught at the college and university levels altogether for 30 years. He has exhibited his paintings and drawings nationally and has received several distinguished grants and numerous exhibition awards. He has work in public, corporate and private collections primarily in the Mid-Atlantic area. He currently lives in Oak Park and maintains a studio in Chicago.
