I carve and paint wood, often found or recycled. Its history, embedded in forms such as scars, growth rings and the traces of human use inspires me. I allow forms to emerge and mutate as I alternate between continuing and interrupting what I find in
the wood.
Stephen Klassen (b.1963, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) is an artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His work is primarily carved and painted wood, both wall mounted and freestanding. Klassen received his MFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His awards include a $10,000 grant from the Minnesota Arts Board. Klassen’s work is exhibited nationally and is in both private and corporate collections.
